He said, “My designs are better than the big names, so why is my company barely holding on?”

A commercial designer with 25 years of experience came to see me. We talked for two hours.
He said, “My designs are no worse than those so-called big names. But business is getting harder and harder. I don’t know what I’m doing wrong.”
I didn’t look at his portfolio.
Instead, I asked him, “Let’s use fishing as an analogy - the fisherman, the bait, and the pond. To successfully catch fish, what do you think you’re missing?”
He thought for a long time.
Then he said, “…It’s me, the fisherman.”
I asked again, “In this moment, what are you saying to yourself?”
He fell silent.
Then he said, “I feel like the clients don’t understand design. The people they choose have much worse work than mine.”
The moment he said it, he himself was stunned.
It wasn’t that his designs were bad.
It was his resentment that made it difficult for clients to trust him.
For the next three months, we worked on one thing: Every time he wanted to say “The client doesn’t understand design,” he would instead ask himself, “Why did they choose that?”
Three months later, he told me: He didn’t get significantly more projects, but his mindset had completely changed. Clients said meetings with him were “no longer so tiring.”
He said, “It turns out what was holding me back wasn’t the clients - it was the things I was telling myself.”
If you also feel like “My work is clearly not bad, but it’s getting harder and harder” - DM me the word “Fishing”. I’ll send you a question first.
