She said she wanted to switch careers. I said, "Answer one question first."

她说想转行,我说:“你先回答我一个问题。

一位设计师跟我说:“我不知道该不该转行。客户越来越难搞,前面困难重重,我该怎么选?”

我没有给她答案。

在一个小时的对话里,我注意到她说话时有一个模式:先鼓励自己,然后马上说“但是……”,接着是一连串的困惑和困难。

我问她:“你说‘但是’的时候,你脑子里在想什么?”

她沉默了很久。

然后说:“……我想找借口逃跑。”

就这一句话。她没有转行。她开始做一件事:每次想说“但是”的时候,先停下来,问自己 - “我是在分析问题,还是在找借口?”

慢慢地,她的步伐变了。不再内卷,不再内耗。她说:“原来困住我的不是客户,是我自己说话的方式。”

A designer told me, "I don't know if I should change careers. Clients are getting harder to deal with, and there are so many obstacles ahead. How do I choose?"

I didn't give her the answer.

During our hour-long conversation, I noticed a pattern in the way she spoke: she would encourage herself, but then immediately say "but…" followed by a string of confusion and difficulties.

I asked her, "When you say 'but,' what's going through your mind?"

She was silent for a long time.

Then she said, "…I'm looking for an excuse to run away."

That was it. She didn't change careers. She started doing one thing: every time she wanted to say "but," she paused and asked herself, "Am I analyzing the problem, or am I making an excuse?"

Slowly, her pace shifted. No more grinding. No more internal friction. She said, "Turns out what was trapping me wasn't my clients, it was the way I talk to myself."
