He said, "Maybe I'm not confident enough." I said, "Take out the 'maybe' and reverse the sentence." He froze for a minute, then laughed.

In a workshop, I invited a design company owner to do a live coaching demonstration.
He looked hesitant and said: "My clients have always been doubtful about my ability… maybe my communication isn't good, maybe I'm not confident enough, maybe I'm…"
I interrupted him: "Come on, let's restructure what you just said. Take out the 'maybe,' and reverse the sentence."
He froze. He thought for a moment, then started again:
"My clients have always affirmed my ability. It's because my communication is good. It's because I have enough confidence. It's because I…"
Halfway through, he stopped himself. His eyes lit up.
I asked him, "How did it feel when you said that?"
He smiled, the kind of smile that comes from tension releasing.
Then he said something heavy: "Coach, today you changed my life."
That day, we didn't talk about any "confidence-building" theories. We did one thing only: we took the "maybe" he'd been saying for over a decade out of his mouth.
After class, we wrote down his "self-declaration" and taped it to the wall in front of his desk. He said, "Before, the moment I opened my mouth, I'd put myself down first. Now I want to see myself first."
If you also always say "maybe" before you speak, reach out. Let's find the root of the problem together. Your time and energy belong on high-return goals.
