She said, “I can’t seem to use my strengths,” and half an hour later, she found her own ceiling.

“My business is okay, but I always feel like I’m not fully utilizing my strengths,” she said, shaking her head.

“What’s holding your strengths back?” I asked.

She answered quickly: “The economy is bad, developers have fewer projects, the city isn’t ideal, design fees are being cut… I’m just trying to survive.”

“Those are all external factors,” I said. “What can you do?”

She was stunned. She thought that was already the answer.

Ten minutes later, she came up with a feasible plan and looked full of confidence. Then, just a minute after that, she retreated again: “…Forget it, I’ll just focus on surviving.”

I looked at her quietly for half a minute.

“What are you really afraid of?”

She didn’t speak.

For the next thirty minutes, we didn’t talk about the economy, the city, or projects. We only talked about one thing - what she was afraid of.

She was afraid of repeating the failure of past projects.

“You’ve just seen the ceiling you set for yourself,” I said. “Now, what do you choose?”

I heard her take a deep breath. This time, she didn’t retreat.
