He took me on a tour of his company. I said six words.

He guided me around.

First was his private office - warm and refined. Then the senior executives’ offices, doors tightly shut.

Around the corner, twenty employees were crammed into a windowless open area, heads down, working in cold silence.

The senior designer who drove me there told me he also serves as a chauffeur for the executives.

In the corridor, an older cleaning lady passed by without any eye contact. Young staff in the pantry kept their heads down.

I said six words: “Isolation. Despair. Helplessness.”

He froze.

“…So that’s why the turnover is high, and people are disengaged?”

I didn’t reply. Looking at the wall, I said: “The way you are is the way the culture is.”

That day we didn’t discuss office design. I asked him to retell the story of how he started the company.

The more he spoke, the more animated he became. There was light in his eyes.

I asked: “Why is that passion locked inside your private room?”

He was silent for a long time.

“I understand now, Coach David.”
