Designers vs. AI - where's the edge? Not skill. It's the passion for "why you do it."

A dean of a university design school talked with me for an hour.
He said: "AI is here. Demand for designers has dropped. Our program can't fill its seats. Some departments have already closed. We added AI courses - still not working. What can we do?"
I asked him: "Compared to AI, where is the edge of the designers you're training?"
He said: "Humanistic literacy, aesthetic judgment, human-AI collaboration skills. If we do these three well, we'll be competitive."
I asked again: "And what creative joy do these 'advantages' actually give your students? Do they help them find a reason why *they*, specifically, are irreplaceable?"
He paused.
That day, we didn't talk about "how to recruit students." Together, we brainstormed: if AI can handle 80% of the execution, what exactly is that 20% of "creative joy" left for designers? It's the joy of turning ideas into questions. The joy of digging out the needs the client never even articulated. The joy of commanding AI, instead of taking orders from it…
He said: "We used to only teach 'how to do it.' Now I finally understand - what students lack isn't skill. It's the passion for why they do it."
If you're also anxious about "AI is here, and my direction is gone" - reach out. Let's find the root of the problem together. Your time and energy belong on high-return goals.
