He said, "My team has no drive." They weren't lazy; he had never asked.

A design company owner came to see me. We talked for an hour.
He said: "The young designers have no drive. Whatever I assign, they can't do it well. I have to keep chasing them, keep revising. The team's execution is just too weak. What should I do?"
I didn't rush to give him a method.
I asked him: "Have you ever collected their feedback?"
He paused. "Never. Do I need to?"
I said: "Good question. What do you think?"
He went silent for a moment.
That day, we didn't discuss "how to chase them more effectively." Over the next three sessions, we did one thing: we rehearsed "how to talk to a designer."
Not how to scold them. How to ask them.
He used to only talk about external incentives: salary, promotion, bonuses. Later, he started asking: "In this project, what do you most want to prove?" "What do you think the meaning of the design we do is?"
Three months later, the atmosphere in the company had changed.
A young employee told him: "Boss, this is exactly the kind of environment where we're willing to give our all."
The team started asking each other these questions too. There was still overtime, but he said: "I can feel energy flowing now - not being pushed along."
He said: "I used to think the problem was that they were lazy. Now I know — I had never asked them what they wanted."
If you also feel your team has no drive and won't move - reach out. Let's find the root of the problem together. Your time and energy belong on high-return goals.
